Preparing Your Hive For Fall

Your house is your home. It’s the magical dwelling where your family begins its days, shares meals, and gets much-needed rest. It’s the abode where you make lifelong memories. Much as a hive provides shelter and structure for honeybees, your home should provide your family with cozy and reliable comfort.

“Exchanging décor to reflect changing seasons is a great way to keep your home inviting and comfortable throughout the year,” says Renee Lilly, owner of Lilly Designs - A Design Resource. “And now is the time to be updating for fall.”

Here are some tried-and-true ways to align your home’s interior this fall with nature’s outdoor showcase of beauty.

  • Color Palette Shifts – Autumn is the time to exchange the bright colors of summer for earthy hues like burnt oranges, rusty reds, mustard yellows and olive greens. It’s also the time to incorporate warm neutrals like taupes, bronzes, caramel and chocolate browns, camels and even blacks and whites to maximize coziness.
  • Textures, Layers & Prints – Throw blankets, pillows, rugs and table linens are important elements to swap out seasonally. This time of year, drape chunky knit, plaid, and faux-fur throw blankets across sofas, chairs and beds. Place velvet, flannel, wool and linen pillows in living areas and bedrooms. Replace area rugs with thicker deep-tone choices or layer to increase warmth and visual impact. Choose warm tones for table linens and dinnerware and even glassware when possible. Swap out small furniture such as an ottoman or cocktail table for a great effect.
  • Natural elements – Bring nature indoors with real and/or faux elements such as wooden vases, trays, and candleholders; branches, leaves and pinecones; pumpkins, gourds and acorns; dried flowers and deer antlers.
  • Scents and Lighting - Choose candles and diffusers in scents like cinnamon, apple and sandalwood, and drape twinkling lights along shelves and mantles to create pops of warm glow in various rooms.

Fall is also the perfect time to take care of indoor and outdoor tasks to prepare for the colder months ahead. Here’s a checklist to help you stay on track:

  • Deep clean your house
  • Clean windows to allow in maximum natural light
  • Wipe down light fixtures
  • Declutter closets
  • Clean out and organize your pantry to prepare for the upcoming holidays
  • Clean out and organize your garage, tucking away items like the lawnmower that you won’t need until spring
  • Deep clean garden tools
  • Scrub and hose down outdoor furniture

Mix one part elbow grease with two parts creativity and you’ll have your home positioned for fall in no time!
